About the Author

Kalena Bovell was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA to Panamanian parents Claudio and Griselda.

Kalena is fairly new to the world as an author, but she is no stranger to writing as her creative writing journey began in elementary school. There, she was apart of a singing group where she helped in writing most of the songs. Her writing skills, however, proved to be prosperous at Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies (LACES) where she was the winner of numerous short story and writing contests. It was at LACES, however, where Kalena was introduced to poetry by a poet that visited her English Literature class once a week. Kalena began writing poetry in 2003 after having experienced a life altering ordeal in 2002.

In 2004, she gained further writing experience by enrolling in creative writing classes and workshops at Chapman University. Within those classes she was introduced to various writing styles and conversational tones that she incorporates into her writing. Drawing inspiration from other writers such as Michael Easton and Maya Angelou, her writing style is considered to be dark, passionate and soulful, making Kalena's poetry truly heartfelt and unique.

Aside from being a writer, Kalena is also an accomplished musician. Having played the violin for over a decade, she has performed at the Walt Disney Concert hall in Los Angeles, the Hollywood Christmas Parade, and has been a regular sub violin player with the South East Symphony.

Currently a senior at Chapman University, she will graduate this coming spring with a Bachelor's degree in Music Education. Kalena hopes to become a music educator at the university level. In addition, she wants to start her own youth group within the inner city areas of Los Angeles and have a prosperous career as a violin player and teacher.

Already setting her sights on a second book, Kalena continues to write poetry whenever possible in hopes of continuing to share her story with others.

She currently resides between Los Angeles and Orange County CA.
